Hockney, David, b.1937-, English painter. Moving from a distorted, semi expressionist form of pop art, Hockney developed a highly personal realistic style, producing images that are saturated with color, witty, and uniquely in-the-moment. Much of his work is also informed by his long-time residence in S California. Hockney's superb draftsmanship is evident in his drawings, paintings, and several series of prints. Hockney is also known for his photographs, his mosaiclike photo montages, and his imaginative stage sets for ballets and operas. His subjects include still life's, portraits, and aspects of homosexual life.
