After the death of his father in 1872, Ury and his family moved from Birnbaum to Berlin. In 1879, he began his studies at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. After having traveled Europe for several years, he returned to Berlin in 1887. His first show in 1889 was met with criticism, however the Akademie awarded him the Michael-Beer-Preis allowing him to travel to Rome and Capri. He returned in 1893 and had a one-man show featuring 67 of his paintings at the Fritz Gurlitt gallery. From 1893-1901, Ury lived in Munich and joined the Secession. After returning to Berlin he began working extensively in the graphic medium and under the encouragement of Lovis Corinth, Ury had his first exhibition with the Berlin Secession in 1915. In the following decade his career flourished, however his creativity began to wane in 1929. Ury rarely left his apartment in the years leading up to his death and his final paintings included several views seen from his window and a self-portrait.
