"Defense and security in Jewish Palestine,
From guarding to underground organization"

The history of the underground defense organizations in Israel is a complicated and interesting story that begins in the beginning of the 20th century, and ends in 1948, when Israel was declared a Jewish state. In this article I shall briefly review the state of the Jewish settlement in Palestine at the beginning of the century, and the reasons that brought the Jews of the first and second waves of immigration to establish the first guarding guild- "Bar- Giora", which grew to become the known guarding organization- "The Shomer" ("The guard"), the formative base of the first large underground organization- "Ha'hagana" (the defense). Basically, this is the story of the birth of the Israeli army. This is the first of two articles that review the underground organizations and operations in Palestine.
During the 19th century, the Jews of Europe were living in scattered, small, and persecuted communities, often victimized by anti-Semitic actions. In the beginning of the 20th century, the pogroms against the European Jews- that seemed to come to a halt at the end of the 19th century- had resumed. The pogrom in Kishinev (the capital of Moldova) in 1903 was the first in the 20th century; More than 50 Jews were murdered, and hundreds were wounded. In other pogroms, mainly the famous< |
